Skyriver Aids in Fire Storm 2007
Fire Storm 2007 has been called the worst natural disaster to hit the United States since Hurricane Katrina. During any natural disaster, one of the most vital services is communications. Emergency services need uninterrupted lines of communication in order to coordinate critical multi-agency response functions. Just as importantly, families need be able to contact loved ones during these periods of great uncertainty.
As fires raged throughout San Diego County, Skyriver Communications experienced no network down time or outages and was able to provide uninterrupted lines of communication to its customers with continued connectivity. Because of our reliable network we were able to respond to the communications crisis by sending volunteers out to install much needed equipment to enable complimentary wireless internet connectivity to the evacuees at multiple evacuation locations throughout the county. In addition, Skyriver Communications donated broadband wireless internet access to two locations at the Del Mar race track, allowing thousands of evacuees access to information at a time when questions and concerns about the safety of loved ones and personal property where at their peak.
The Del Mar race track was the county’s second largest evacuation facility, and one of the only locations able to accommodate large animals Along with their beloved animals, owners congregated around the stables and while needs for food, shelter and support were adequately provided for, communication needs were left unattended. The only operational communication devices were cell phones, which worked only sporadically due to the lines being jammed. Skyriver’s emergency response to this need was to donate and install two access points at the race track which allowed the evacuees much needed access to critical information.
In addition to the stables area, Skyriver also deployed a communications network at the Plaza Mexico, the central gathering location for evacuees. Skyriver’s high capacity services penetrated the building insuring people could use the service from the comfort of indoors and away from toxic ash falling from the sky.
As well as the wireless networks established at various evacuation centers, Skyriver provided the press contingent to the President of the United with on demand WiFi Hotspot and high speed Internet coverage at MCAS Miramar. The Presidential coordinator contacted our office at 3pm on Wednesday evening for a 9am visit the following day. We were able to coordinate our back office team and deploy a high capacity, secured wireless data link by 5:30pm that same day.
The Skyriver offices are located in Poway and many team members were evacuated from their homes and our hearts and thoughts go out to them and everyone affected in these difficult times. Skyriver is proud to call San Diego home, and it was our great pleasure to be able to contribute to the disaster response effort.

"For over six months I had been struggling to find a solution to my Internet connectivity issues. Using cable modem service, I found myself restricted in my usage and performance was unreliable. I had been considering DSL, but dealing with the runaround and delays became intolerable. I ordered by Fixed Wireless broadband service from SkyRiver and the next afternoon the team was there to complete the installation. Since the service went in I have had consistent performance and have accomplished everything that the cable and DSL companies had been preventing me from doing."
